Last year, Twitter’s new CEO dismissed almost 90% of its staff in India, leading to the prediction of office closures. As part of his plan to reduce operating costs and increase profitability, CEO Elon Musk has announced the closure of two Twitter offices in India. Twitter have total of three offices in India.
The Mumbai and New Delhi offices, which had been expected to shut down for some time, are now officially closing. The remaining office in Bengaluru will continue to operate, with most of its employees being engineers.
Twitter Offices In India
Employees still working in the Mumbai and New Delhi offices are now asked to work from home. Twitter’s staff cuts are not limited to India and have been a part of Musk’s overall strategy since he acquired the company.
In addition to staff cuts, Musk has implemented other measures to increase profits, such as introducing a paid blue tick and lifting bans on political advertising on the platform.
These measures have been met with both criticism and support from Twitter users. Some have applauded Musk’s efforts to make Twitter profitable, while others have criticized the removal of bans on political advertising and the introduction of paid features.
India has been an important market for Twitter, with the country having the second-highest number of users in the world after the United States. However, the company has faced several challenges in the country, including controversies over its content moderation policies and handling of the farmer protests that took place in India in early 2021.
The closure of the Mumbai and New Delhi offices is expected to impact Twitter’s operations in India further. However, the company has stated that it remains committed to the Indian market and will continue to serve its users in the country.
As Twitter continues navigating through a challenging and evolving Social Media landscape, it remains to be seen how its latest cost-cutting measures will impact its long-term viability and relevance.
