Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, is reportedly securing venture capital for a new AI startup, according to Reuters.
The startup aims to develop AI products powered by proprietary models, with reports suggesting it could raise over $100 million in its initial funding round.
In her departure announcement last month on X (formerly Twitter), Murati highlighted OpenAI’s achievements, saying the company had “fundamentally changed how AI systems learn and solve complex problems” through its latest innovations.
She explained her decision to leave, stating, “I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration,” without revealing specific details about her next steps.
Mira Murati’s career prior to OpenAI included roles at Tesla and Leap Motion. She joined OpenAI in 2018 as VP of Applied AI and Partnerships, later rising to CTO in 2022. During her tenure, she also briefly served as interim CEO when co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was temporarily ousted.
Mira Murati departure is part of a broader wave of executive exits at OpenAI. Just hours after Murati’s announcement, the company’s chief research officer and VP of research also resigned. A week later, OpenAI announced it had secured $6.6 billion in funding—the largest venture capital round to date.
